I just recently read that MariaDB had changed from being open source.
There was a time not too long ago, that I felt that Oracle’s ownership of MySQL was going to cause problems, and that this new upstart, named MariaDB would be the software that was needed to replace it. It was so slick, that it would just pop into place and not need any changes, adjustments, or new code, to work in place of a MySQL installation.
Well, how the times, they are a-changin’!
Now Oracle has kept MySQL open, and I read that MariaDB has closed source to enable sales. Well, okay, maybe it hasn’t gone full closed-source, but the owning company is charging for corporate use as part of the licensing scheme. There is more to it, so I recommend reading more if you are interested.
In the meantime, MySQL seems as good and open as it has ever been. Now if they would just simply support it better in SAP’s software offerings, I’d be better set….
